DOOMNATION COMICS

Metropolis and Gotham City are where you can expect to find familiar superheroes like Superman and Batman. Any comic book fan knows that. But did you know that Linda Vista should now be officially added to that list of superhero locales?
No, unfortunately, we don’t have caped crusaders guarding our Linda Vista streets or skies, but with the opening of Doomnation Comics at 5390 Napa Street, comic book aficionados can now find artwork associated with Superman, Batman and other superheroes in one local aesthetically-inspiring place.
Doomnation Comics, which just opened its doors on August 17, is a pop culture gallery showcasing art and products dedicated to superhero stories from comics, television, and film.
If you are fan of comic book characters like Superman, Batman, Marvel Comics, and Avenger movies this is the place to shop for a fun and creative product. As advertised on their website, it’s the place to INDULGE YOUR FANDOM.
Owned by brothers David and Jeff Burke, this new store offers an interesting 3-part combination of products that includes artwork like posters and collages, collectable mugs and figurines, and graphic novels. The gallery is conveniently divided into separate rooms along these lines.
David and Jeff Burke
One of the more interesting collections featured by the gallery includes the collage art pieces produced by David Burke. The collages consist of parts of comic books that are cut up and then “rearranged in ways that don’t exist in the original books…condensing the stories down so they become symbolic.” According to Burke’s statement on the Doomnation web site, “I started creating pieces like these back in 2008, for my own enjoyment. I wanted to take some of my most beloved characters, worlds, and art and find a way to remix it in an attempt to squeeze new meaning out of the source material.”
Primarily a gallery, the store does not sell comic books like the typical comic bookstore, but does sell paperback books that consist of compilations of several comic books, as well as graphic novels (books in which a story in conveyed to the reader using art in a traditional comics format).
Room full of superhero comic collages
According to the Burke brothers, Doomnation Comics caters to comic book fans of all ages with something for everyone. The store’s appeal was described by David Burke as directed toward the kind of customers “who grew up reading comics and now want to return to that genre, as well as that new fan base who recently saw a superhero movie.”
The Burke brothers were inspired to open the store as a result of their college background in studying art, film and pop culture. One of their favorite comic book artists is Todd McFarlane, the artist and writer of the horror-fantasy series Spawn, who also helped start Image Comics. The brothers also identified Umbrella Academy, The Boys and Daredevil Season 3 as some of their favorite superhero TV streaming shows. In addition, they are also fans of Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, The Wachowskis (the writers/directors of The Matrix), Christopher Nolan (the director of The Dark Knight), Jonathan Nolan (co-creator of HBO’s Westworld), and the Netflix series Black Mirror.
Needless to say, Doomnation Comics has faced quite a challenge by opening during these pandemic times. They originally planned to open back in March, but the plans were immediately stalled by the pandemic restrictions. As it turns out, their expected foot traffic has been reduced by the closure of the nearby USD campus. But they are optimistic about everything eventually working out.

Even if you’re not a fan of comics, the store seems like the perfect place to shop if you want a gift for that special comic book fan. (hint: There are only 89 shopping days till Christmas).
Sad about this year’s cancellation of Comic-Con? I believe you can draw some consolation by visiting this store.
Looking for interesting reading material that might appeal to a young reader bored by traditional books? You might want to browse the store’s graphic novels and see what’s available.
Interested in visiting a place that has cool pop art on display? Then by all means check out this unique gallery.
The Doomnation Comics web site can be found here.
In closing, the Burke brothers encourage everyone “to stop by if they are fans of superhero films, TV shows or comic books.” And as David Burke offered, “Hopefully, you’ll be able to find something that speaks to your soul.
