Skateworld Opens--a Sign Things are Getting Better
Plus, Linda Vista Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, Super Foster Kitten Available, and Upcoming Community Events
No doubt about it. Skating makes up a crucial aspect of the Linda Vista community’s heart and soul. Where else in San Diego county can you find a world class Skate Park and an indoor skating rink (Skateworld) within easy walking/skating distance of each other?
And everyone remembers how ferociously Linda Vistans fought to have the San Diego City Council keep Skateworld open back in 2019.
During the pandemic, the popular Linda Vista Skate Park, located on the grounds of the Linda Vista Recreation Center, has remained open for business. If you walked past the Skate Park on any day during the past year, you were likely to find the venue full of eager skaters gliding along the concrete surface in the beautiful open air.
Unfortunately, the indoor leg of Linda Vista’s skating duo—Skateworld—remained closed throughout the pandemic due to state-imposed COVID restrictions.
Fortunately, however, with the county’s recent move to the Orange tier, Linda Vista skaters now have reason to celebrate as Skateworld has recently conducted what amounts to a soft reopening. As indicated on their web site, Skateworld is now open at 10% capacity. Though limited in nature, the venue’s opening seems to signal a strong sense of hope that the end of the pandemic is near and that things will eventually return to some degree of normalcy. As indicated by a Skateworld employee, sessions have been full, with customers making reservations well in advance of the scheduled times.
According to the Skateworld web site, here are some of the things you need to know if you want to attend a skating session:
--You must make a reservation to skate.
--You must make reservations online.
--Walk-ins are not being accepted at this time.
--Social distancing and masks are required.
--You must sign a waiver (obtained on-line) to skate.
--Public skate sessions are being held Friday-Sunday. Individuals can sign up for hour and a half sessions which go for $15.00.
--Coffee Clutch sessions (age 21 and above) are held on Tuesdays from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Admission is $15.00.
--Skate School sessions are being held Saturday mornings from 9:30am to 10:30am. Sessions are available for $20.00.
--40 person facility rentals are available Tuesdays and Thursday. Cost is $399.00.
While paying a visit to Skateworld on Tuesday morning, I observed a line of skaters waiting for the doors to open for the weekly Coffee Clutch skating session. These 21 and over skaters were quick to express their happiness over Skateworld’s opening, a few of them proudly identifying themselves as pre-pandemic Coffee Clutch regulars. A couple skaters mentioned how they kept up their skating habit during the pandemic, going to places like Balboa Park, Liberty Station, and the Mission/Pacific beach boardwalk. However, they were adamant about commenting, “When it comes to skating, there’s no substitute for wood,” adding that they appreciate Skateworld’s “smooth skating surface” and the absence of “rocks, twigs and cracks in the cement” that they frequently encounter at other skating sites.
We welcome back Skateworld—a great Linda Vista institution. And we look forward to the day when this venue can fully reopen!
So now go get your skates (and your mask) and get ready to do a few laps around the Skateworld track!

Linda Vista Scavenger Hunt this Saturday!
This Saturday, April 24, the 36th Linda Vista Multi-cultural Fair will host a Scavenger Hunt during which participants will navigate their way through Linda Vista sites to conduct drive-thru curbside pickup of goodie bags and resources from key Linda Vista hubs. This event will highlight hidden gems in the neighborhood, and you might even win some prizes.
The Scavenger Hunt (10:00 am to 2:00 pm) will take the place of the traditional fair activities and parade, which were cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.
The theme of the Scavenger Hunt is “All the Places You’ll Go.”
In past years, the Linda Vista Multi-Cultural Fair and Parade has been held annually on the 6900 block of Linda Vista Road, (between Comstock and Ulric Streets). The event is intended to promote cultural awareness and understanding within the City of San Diego, and to celebrate the rich diversity of the Linda Vista community.
According to one of the event’s web sites, this year’s Scavenger Hunt “will help you discover hidden gems and visit city staples throughout Linda Vista. Your mission- should you choose to accept- is to find all these "hidden gems" before the hunt ends at 2PM ON APRIL 24TH... oh, and you may encounter some surprises and PRIZES along the way! And yes, you or a parent will be required to drive to these locations in order to stay socially distant.”

If you’ve ever attended past editions of the Linda Vista Multi-Cultural Parade and Fair, you will certainly have fond memories of the diverse and talented performance groups that entertained the crowds, as well as the great selection of food vendors. And everyone always enjoyed the parade, with such familiar participants as the lion dancers, the Brazilian samba dancers, the Skateworld skaters, the Miss Vietnam royal courts, the Marine Corps, USD NROTC, and Kearny JROTC honor guards, the USD athletes, and the various middle and high school marching bands.
We hope to see the return of the Parade and Fair in 2022. Until then, see you at the Scavenger Hunt!
Awesome Foster Kitten Available
Texas is an awesome SD Humane Society foster kitten who will be available for adoption starting this Monday afternoon (April 26). We have been fostering him the past three weeks. During this time he has developed into a very active and social kitten with lots of personality! In addition to being very handsome, he loves to play, and when he gets tired he enjoys hopping on someone’s lap to relax and socialize. I guarantee he will grow up to be a great family pet/companion. If you or someone you know is interested in adopting him, please contact me at srodriguez2@san.rr.com to arrange reserving him for adoption from the SD Humane Society.
