The Linda Vista Update—a Community Newsletter
This is kind of an encore review. We originally reviewed Coco Bomb (located on Ulric Street) when they first opened. It was a cute, friendly place but was still in its opening stage, hadn’t yet revealed a complete menu, and was not widely known around the community. However, we recently noticed while driving around town that more people have been congregating at Coco Bomb and the front area had been spruced up to look like a tropical island. Hence, we decided it was time to take another look. So off we went on a recent sunny afternoon- three amigos and a dog.
We are happy to report it is still cute and friendly...and now very busy. Their menu has expanded and everything looked delicious, although I still had to have some items explained to me. Of course all the ice cream dishes looked amazing but it was a cool day and we wanted to sit outside so I decided against that (Gives me an excuse to go back again). Instead I opted for a moon cake, Steve tried a coconut water and our friend was adventurous and ordered Bou Loy, although she didn’t have a clue what it was. The dog just sat patiently wondering what she would get. She usually goes to Yum Yum Donuts, so she was a little apprehensive, but hoped for the best.
Steve really liked the coconut drink. He was on a liquid diet for the day or he would have gotten the ice cream dessert. We saw many people order it and they seemed to be really enjoying it
We sat outside which is decorated with green grass and umbrellas. It was a great place to sit and watch the rush hour traffic go by on Ulric Street.
Our friend’s meal was a warm sweet coconut milk with rice balls, taro and coconut. I tasted it and it was great. She really liked it as well. My moon cake was pink and had a creamy inside that resembled a paste and egg yolks. It was very tasty, not too sweet. Our friend and her dog also enjoyed it — especially her dog, who licked all the crumbs and cream from my hand. Luckily my fingers survived.
Coco Bomb has many drinks, including coffee and Thai tea, milk tea, sodas, lots of desserts and some appetizers. Of course coconuts are the stars of the show. All the customers seemed to be enjoying themselves. We are happy to see that the business is thriving.
One of the co-owners told Steve his goal was to open a cafe that prepared Thai menu items authentically as they are prepared in Thailand. He hadn’t been able to find such a place. We think he succeeded here in Linda Vista.
So give Coco Bomb a try, and mention that you read about them in the Linda Vista Update.

The LV Football Figure Mystery
People are talking. Speculation is running rampant. Suitable answers elude us.
What am I referring to?
An intriguing mystery has suddenly popped up in our LV community. Interestingly enough, the mystery includes elements of art, sports and Mexican food—quite a combination, to say the least.
The mystery has at its centerpiece a life-size ceramic figure of a football player that mysteriously showed up and was installed at the San Diego Bakery back in early February. This bakery, located at 6959 Linda Vista Road, is one of the community’s newest businesses. We featured San Diego Bakery in this newsletter upon its opening back in December.
It’s not every day that flying saucers show up in Roswell, New Mexico. It’s not every day that Big Foot makes an appearance in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. And it’s not every day that a life-size ceramic figure of a football player of unknown origin suddenly shows up in the lobby of a Mexican bakery, but apparently such is life in Linda Vista these days.
According to San Diego Bakery owner Hugo Garcia, “The football player mysteriously showed up outside our doors one morning during the week before the Super Bowl. We thought it would be fun to display it inside the bakery to help celebrate the Super Bowl game.”
Where did the football player originally come from? “I don’t know,” Garcia replied.
Who made the statue? “Who knows?” mused Garcia.
How long will the figure remain in the bakery if it is not reclaimed? “I’m not sure,” the bakery owner said. “But we have grown to like it, so we might start using it for future promotions. Maybe we’ll paint our business’s name on the jersey.”
What is the significance of the sports statue? Here is what we know. The figure does happen to host the colors of Kearny High School and the uniform bears a very strong resemblance to Kearny’s traditional football uniform design, complete with a variation on the famous Kearny “white stripes” on the shoulders. So, it’s logical to assume the figure is perhaps meant to pay homage to the Kearny Komet football program. It could be the anonymous artist is a proud Kearny alum. As for any other clues, Kearny alums might be able to use their historical knowledge to determine if any significance can be attributed to the number 08 worn by the figure.
Then again, the figure’s uniform color is also similar to that worn by the Kansas City Chiefs—the 2023 Super Bowl champions. So maybe the sudden appearance of this figure during Super Bowl week was indeed a timely message from the universe to make a big Super Bowl bet on the Chiefs. Who knows for sure?
In any event, Linda Vistans should just go ahead and enjoy the mystery. In fact, the community could do with a few more of these sports figures around the LV neighborhood. How about one or two depicting SDSU Aztec basketball players? Or maybe Manny Machado? Readers, any more suggestions?
LV Update Readers—Join Our SD Humane Society Fundraiser
One of the greatest institutions located within the borders of Linda Vista is the San Diego Humane Society. If you have been reading the LV Update newsletter for some time now, you know that we are big fans of this fantastic organization. We often publicize the fundraising/supply needs of the SD Humane Society’s famous kitten nursery and enjoy posting photos of the many kittens we foster and help get ready for adoption during kitten season.
However, we now want to more formally arrange an effort to help raise funds for the SD Humane Society. And we are asking our community of LV Update readers to help support us in this effort. Don’t worry…this effort doesn’t require much work from readers. Our very own Carnivore Sidekick (who participates in many of our food review adventures) will do all the heavy lifting….or, shall we say, walking!
On Saturday May 6, the SD Humane Society is sponsoring its annual Walk for Animals at Liberty Station. As part of this event, volunteers sign up to walk the 2 mile course and get people to pledge donations for the SD Humane Society. As explained on the SD Humane Society web site, “The Walk for Animals is one of San Diego Humane Society’s largest fundraising events of the year and helps raise money to care for the thousands of wild and domestic animals that will come through the shelter in 2023. Every dollar raised makes a lifesaving difference for more than 40,000 animals who rely on us for a second chance.”
In order to support the SD Humane Society, we are “volunteering” our Carnivore Sidekick to participate in the Walk for Animals as a representative of the LV Update. He has established a fundraising goal of $500.00. What we would like is for enough LV Update readers to sign up on the SD Humane Society web site and pledge $10.00 each. All the money will go to the SD Humane Society. As such, we are hoping to entice approximately 50 LV Update readers to pledge this modest monetary amount before May 6.
You can pledge your $10.00 by doing the following:
Click on this SD Humane Society web site address: https://secure.sdhumane.org/site/TR;jsessionid=00000000.app20074a?fr_id=1411&pg=entry&NONCE_TOKEN=8D5B4224228ABFECFCD32349D019950E&_ga=2.170025635.2045544075.1680461116-552002374.1676908505
Scroll down till you see the section that says “Search for a participant or team.” Click on “participant.” Then, type Carnivore (first name) and Sidekick (last name) in the “Search for a participant” section, and then hit “return.”
Click on the Carnivore Sidekick’s name when it shows up.
4. Then click on the “Donate”button on the next page.
Next, enter $10.00 under “other amount,” and then enter all of your required “billing” and “payment” information.
Click on “Process” button.
Once you receive notification that your payment has been approved, please pat yourself on the back for donating to such a worthy cause and feel confident that the physically fit Carnivore Sidekick will do his part on May 6 and walk the Liberty Station course with great vim and vigor.
We will continue to remind our readers of this fundraising effort throughout April and in the days immediately leading up to the May 6 walk.
We thank all of our readers in advance for participating in this fun and extremely worthwhile fundraising effort, and the Carnivore Sidekick will eventually thank you as well.
Mission Heights Kids Enjoy Easter Egg Hunt
This past Saturday morning, Mission Heights resident and neighborhood realtor Bree Partington coordinated a fun community Easter Egg Hunt activity for local kids and their families The Easter Egg Hunt was held at Mission Heights Neighborhood Park.
The activity included Easter Egg hunts for different age groups. Many enthusiastic rabbit-eared kids armed with baskets and bags were able to take advantage of the sunny weather and the lush park grass to make a mad dash for colorful eggs. With some assistance from parents and grandparents every kid was able to experience success in finding their share of eggs. No one left disappointed.
Participants were also treated to free snacks and refreshments.
This Easter Egg Hunt is the latest in a series of community events for families sponsored by Bree Partingon, to include a Pumpkin Carving event in October and a Valentine Card Making event in February.

The Linda Vista Update wishes to commend Bree Partington on her community spirit and for sponsoring such a fun family event.
