PEDAL AHEAD E-BIKE PROGRAM IN SUPERVISORIAL ZONE 4
Want a little excitement in your life? Concerned about the environment? Are you willing to exert a little energy while riding up the steep LV inclines encountered going up Linda Vista Road, Ulric Street or Via Las Cumbres, but okay with accepting a little help? Want to be on the cutting edge of the red hot e-bike trend? If you answered yes to these questions, then you might want to look into joining Supervisor Nathan Fletcher’s new Pedal Ahead program. According to Supervisor Fletcher’s web site, Pedal Ahead is “a two-year, emission-reducing program designed to serve as an alternative to automobile transportation in the fourth supervisorial district, with a particular focus on Chollas, City Heights, Encanto, Linda Vista, Rolando and Redwood Village. Pedal Ahead’s goal is to provide quality of life improvement for residents by making e-bikes available for daily commuting and recreational activities.”
The Pedal Ahead program will provide up to 400 e-bikes to residents through spring 2021. Supervisor Fletcher’s web states…“The e-bikes will be available to people ages 18 and up with Pedal Ahead participants required to ride an average of five miles per day over the course of the two-year period. Participants are required to show proof of insurance that covers the liability, loss, theft and damage to their e-bike, and use a GPS technology app to track and report mileage and trip patterns to the non-profit Rider Safety Visibility for an e-bike study.
Participants who complete all requirements over the two years will be able to keep the bikes.
Residents in the following zip codes in Supervisorial 4 are eligible to apply for the program: 92307, 92093, 92101, 92103, 92104, 92105, 92106, 92107, 92108, 92109, 92110, 92111, 92114, 92115, 92116, 92117, 92123, 92140, 92161, with an emphasis in the 92105, 92102, 92114, 92115, and 92111 (Linda Vista) zip codes.

INTERVIEW WITH LINDA VISTA RESIDENT DAWN ESSINGTON
Dawn and her family of volunteers
Editor’s Note: This interview is the first in a series of interviews with Linda Vista residents we will be posting in the next couple of weeks. We hope the interviews will provide our readers with some interesting insights regarding the Linda Vista community.
Today’s interview is with Dawn Essington, a long time resident of Linda Vista. She grew up right here in this community. She has been active in supporting numerous activities at the Linda Vista Recreation Center and currently sits on the Linda Vista Recreation Advisory Council. She has also served on the PTA at Kearny High, the PTO at Longfellow K-8, and has served as a Sunday school teacher at Legacy Church.
Question # 1: What would you like to see happen in Linda Vista in terms of improvements, projects, activities , etc., in the next couple years?
Answer: I would love to see something done to help our homeless neighbors. I wouldn’t know how to go about this, however, I definitely feel it has become a crisis in most neighborhoods and something needs to be done about it. The other area of opportunity is our neighborhood recreation center. It needs an overhaul. We have brought so much to our community through this site, but we have outgrown it. It seems like a mass strategy just to run our programming. Cancel basketball practice, move karate to the gym, have cheer go outside( even when it’s late October and temperatures have dropped); then and only then can you have theater practice in the auditorium for an hour before the next group comes in. You have to be sure to pick up all props or they will probably get destroyed, even though you put in countless hours of hand making them. A permanent place for our seniors to run their Tai Chi class would also be amazing. We service so many community members at the recreation center. It would be beneficial to have a state-of-the-art facility there.
Question # 2: You have a couple hours of free time to spend in Linda Vista. How would you like to spend this time?
Answer: I would love to get back to some kind of normalcy. This pandemic has taken all of that away😩. I miss preparing for Family Fun Friday’s at the recreation center! All of those tireless events to help create funding to keep all those wonderful programs going. It is a tremendous workload, however, very enriching. I truly miss making community happen. I am not that computer savvy so this has been a huge undertaking for me. I am dedicated so I will continue to work through these obstacles. I truly miss the face-to-face interactions with my community.
Question # 3: Do you have a favorite Linda Vista memory?
Answer: I would have to say one of my greatest memories is going to an all-you-can-eat breakfast at the Boys and Girls Club. It was sponsored by the Camarillos’. They owned the Linda Vista McDonald’s at the time and donated all the food. It was a fundraiser to support the club. Of course, I didn’t really know anything about that, I just really liked to eat! Being the only girl and youngest of six older brothers raised by a single mother we rarely got seconds!
Question # 4: Any other thoughts about Linda Vista that you would like to elaborate upon?
I was raised to see people as people. (Growing up in Linda Vista) we didn’t realize or think too much of what race or color you are. Just “what’s your name?” I didn’t even realize that we were such a diverse community. I have grown to know what that means. But I still believe people are just people. Let’s support each other the best way we know how. One of my mottos is “Kill’em with kindness.” My husband and I have four beautiful children and our granddaughter that we have been raising here in the community. I never let my firstborn participate too much in local events. I wanted to show her there was better out there. Later though, with my second child and another circle of life, I realized that we have to become part of the solution. If not, we are part of the problem. Thus ensued my involvement with the Linda Vista Recreation Center. Through my son’s participation in flag football, I became a “team mom” and started volunteering to make a difference. I hope I have made some valuable contributions along the way. I continued in programming with my next son Jesse James, my youngest Jolisa Marie who is 10 now, and my 13 year old granddaughter Alexis. Wow, how time flies when you are having fun, right? I joined the Linda Vista Recreation Council in 2006 after spending my daughter’s rent money on See’s candy bars and quickly selling them (to get her rent money back) in order to get recreation funds to purchase some kind of uniforms for our little ones to perform in. I was so excited that Vanessa Denojean has joined our team and we can now do girly things. Yay! Another circle😉”
