Editor’s note: This a a special abbreviated Monday issue of the Linda Vista Update, focusing on this past Saturday’s 37th Annual Linda Vista Multi-Cultural Fair and Parade, which was deemed a rousing success by all attendees and participants.
After a two-year pause, a favorite Linda Vista tradition was finally able to resume this past Saturday, allowing local residents an opportunity to enjoy a beautiful day and the rich diversity of our community. The 37th Annual Linda Vista Multi-Cultural Fair and Parade entertained attendees with various ethnic food venues, a host of music and dance performances, civic-minded informational booths, commercial booths, and fun carnival rides for the kids. The Parade featured a wide variety of performers, representatives from local groups and schools, and several prominent government dignitaries responsible for representing Linda Vista.
Thousands of people made up the enthusiastic crowd attending the Fair and Parade.
Fair Director Lauren Garces commented “The return of this year’s Linda Vista Multi-Cultural Fair and Parade was heartwarming and made us realize how proud our community should be of its diversity and resilience.”
Entertainment was conducted on two stages. Food vendors ranged from Filipino food, to Kenyan cuisine, to Hawaiian treats. You could find such interesting fare as hot dogs, Filipino short bread cookies, steamed dumplings, kettle corn, cheese wontons, boba tea, and Kenyan beef stew.
Various informational booths were staffed by representatives from the University of San Diego’s Nursing program, the Coastal Canyon Fire Safe Council, the San Diego Parks Foundation, and the Linda Vista Town Council, to name just a few.
Booths like the RadHatter kept kids busy by giving them some hands-on opportunities to make and decorate their own hats out of paper bags.
“We were exceptionally proud to have so many elected officials in attendance this year,” said Janet Kaye, president of the Fair Board. Elected officials present at the Fair included Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (53rd U.S. Congressional District), State Senator Toni Atkins (Senate District 39), State Assemblymember Dr. Akilah Weber (79th Assembly District), County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher (4th District), San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, and City Councilmember Raul Campillo (Council District 7). As mentioned by Lauren Garces, “This year’s event was historic because it was the first time in 37 years where all the elected officials representing the neighborhood were in attendance during the Parade and Welcoming Ceremony.”
Some of the major sponsors and supporters of the Fair and Parade included the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, ACCESS Inc, the University of San Diego’s Mulvaney Center, Bayside Community Center, US Bank, Investcal Realty Corp., Civita/Sudberry Properties, the SD Mustang Club, the LV Boys and Girls Club, and the LV Parade of Flags.
As stated by Fair Director Garces, “The LV Multi-Cultural Parade and Fair beautifully showcased the neighborhood’s rich cultural diversity and the power of a community coming together to build bridges, empower our youth, and help one another.”
We are proud to report that my wife and I were given the honor of serving as Grand Marshals for the Parade. Our very own Carnivore Sidekick rode in the car with me as Betty stayed in our booth to make sure we got more residents to sign up as newsletter subscribers. Many LV Update subscribers lining the parade booth waved to us and happily greeted the Carnivore. A “Thank You” to all of our subscribers who stopped by the Linda Vista Update booth to say hello and give us feedback on the newsletter. And we appreciate all the Fair attendees who signed up to be new subscribers.
