Eureka! After much exploration, I have finally found it. And right here in the Linda Vista area, of all places! What am I referring to? I’m talking about the “munchies” equivalent of the Holy Grail. The much sought cost-effective unicorn of food made to be served while watching Monday Night football. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the heretofore mythical five-dollar large pizza—what might possibly be the best deal in town—is real and being served at Mesa Pizza, right across the street from Kearny High School in the Mesa College Square.
Thomas Marshall, vice-president during Woodrow Wilson’s administration, is famous for commenting “What this country needs is a good ten cent cigar.” Marshall may have provided an overly simplistic answer to what ailed the country back in those days, but I can certainly understand his perspective. He knew how important that rare combination of quality and inexpensive price was to the American consumer. After all, when the going gets tough, Americans deserve the kind of break that a reasonably priced deal offers.
Americans live a lot healthier lifestyle than they did in the early 1900’, so when looking for a satisfying deal, a cigar just won’t cut it these days—but nearly every American likes pizza. It’s America’s favorite food. It’s also been described as the “perfect food,” containing an elusive combination of “carbs, fiber, protein, good fats, lean meats and veggies.” We have all experienced the kind of happiness associated with eating a pizza. That’s why I have long contended that what this country needs today is a good five-dollar pizza! It might not solve our more complex problems, but it will definitely help us cope. Thanks to inflation, I haven’t seen a good five-dollar pizza since the Clinton administration. So you can imagine what a pleasant surprise it was to find out such a great deal exists right here in the Linda Vista area!! We may be living in tough times, but cheer up, my fellow Linda Vista citizens. A good five-dollar pizza (with one topping) is indeed available to us 7 days a week at Mesa Pizza. It seems Congress might not give us a second stimulus bill, and you might have to wait a few months for that COVID-19 vaccine, but a bargain deal on a good tasting pizza is easily within our grasp, right here, right now.
Imagine the following scenario…you have the munchies, but you happen to be on a strict budget. Where do you go to satisfy your primal gastronomical urges? Better yet, imagine a situation in which you happen to have some cash, but you don’t want just any old junk food—you also want some quality? Where is the place that can meet your high personal standards? Even better, imagine you have some cash, but your penniless friend or significant other is also hungry. What kind of deal can you find that will allow both of you to eat at a reasonable price? The answer to all three scenarios obviously involves going to Mesa Pizza and ordering that five-dollar pizza. It checks off so many boxes.
My wife and I recently tried Mesa’s five-dollar pizza. Our one topping included mushrooms. We found the pizza to be surprisingly good. We weren’t sure what to expect for five dollars. We were naturally suspicious. After all, a mere five dollars sounded too good to be true, and after watching the Padres trade a bunch of young prospects for several mediocre/injured players this past August, I had grown wary of getting ripped off in any type of transaction that promises a good deal. As it turns out, we were more than satisfied by the texture of the thin crust and the quality and quantity of the sauce. There were plenty of mushrooms. And it easily fed the both of us (and then some). We expect to order it again in the future. Was it the greatest pizza we have ever tasted? Maybe not, but then again we didn’t have to pay for airfare to New York City to eat it. We just had to drive up Linda Vista Road, and then take a left at Mesa College Drive.
How good a deal is this five dollar pizza? I now maintain that Mesa’s five-dollar pizza is the best eating deal in the Linda Vista area. Number two on my best deal list includes the $1.50 hot dog/soda combination at Costco. That deal is certainly hard to beat. However, no one has ever called a hot dog the perfect food in terms of nutrition. And everyone knows this particular deal is just a lure to get you inside Costco, where you will end up spending a couple hundred dollars more.
Number three on my list includes the Loaded Potato dish at Mr. Peabody’s. It’s only $6.50 on Fridays. It’s tasty and filling and goes well with beer. But the five-dollar pizza at Mesa Pizza is available at the same price 7 days a week. And it’s big enough to feed at least two people.
Besides the five-dollar pizza, Mesa Pizza’s other popular dishes include the Hawaiian Pizza at $6.99, and the Mexican Pizza at $10.99. You really can’t go wrong with those prices.
If you are looking for food to eat during an afternoon of football watching, or if you need several pizzas for a party, or if you’re just plain hungry, I suggest you stop by Mesa Pizza. They have some friendly people behind the counter. Place that order. Chances are good you won’t be disappointed.

The LV Boys and Girls of Late Autumn
The very first post of the Linda Vista Update was published back on the sunny summer day of July 10. In that post (https://lindavistaupdate.substack.com/p/the-linda-vista-boys-and-girls-of ), we featured the LV boys and girls of summer doing their thing at the Linda Vista Skateboard Park. Now, here we are nearly six months later, and so we decided to return to the Skateboard Park and see what was going on.
We are happy to report that LV boys and girls of late autumn are still at it, enjoying themselves in the open air while carrying out their acrobatics in the crisp, sunny December weather. On the day we visited, the weather was a perfect 72 degrees. Not bad for a December afternoon. Much warmer than the December day that was being experienced, for example, in the capital city of Iceland.
It was fun to see the skaters attempting to defy gravity with their moves, while taking advantage of the fine weather. A perfect Southern California scene at a perfect Linda Vista venue.
So many other activities have been cancelled these past few months, Apparently, skating at the LV Skateboard Park continues to be a reliable constant during these turbulent pandemic times.
Wonderful Foster Kitten Available for Adoption
We have been fostering a wonderful kitten, and we are happy to report that she will be available for adoption beginning this Friday afternoon (December 4).
Her name is Princess Pearls. She is older than most kittens we have fostered (she is 4 months old), but she is definitely one of the most personable, playful and affectionate kittens we’ve ever had the pleasure of taking care of. She loves to play, and when she gets tired she is quick to jump on your lap to relax.
She was brought into SD Humane Society as a stray, but she readily adapted to being a well behaved indoor cat. In spite of her being a stray kitten, she appears to be rather refined. I believe that if she could speak, she would do so with a refined British accent.
I guarantee you she will make a perfect pet.
If you or someone you know is interested in adopting this kitten, call the SD Humane Society at 619-299-7012 and then refer to her ID # 706467. She will be spayed during the afternoon of December 4, and then made immediately available for adoption later in the day.
