Super Bowl Means Pizza
Super Bowl LV is nearly upon us (Feb 7), and once again San Diego fans have no team involved in the contest. The hapless Los Angeles Chargers have proven no more successful than our former San Diego Chargers. But that’s okay, because you don’t need to have a home team in the Super Bowl to enjoy the day. Super Bowl Sunday is really all about the food we devour while watching the game. The Super Bowl is just an excuse for gorging on our favorite foods. I’m not sure, but I think it was the famous Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi, victorious coach of the first two Super Bowls, who once said “Winning isn’t everything, it’s all about the food.” And as everyone knows, one of the most popular foods served while watching the Super Bowl is pizza. That’s why the Linda Vista Update recently paid a visit to the Pizza Hut in Linda Vista—one of the most popular venues in our community! We used the occasion to ask some timely questions about pizza so that LV residents can be best prepared for eating on Super Bowl Sunday. The Pizza Hut’s manager was kind enough to answer our questions and enlighten us. Here is what she had to say:
Besides Super Bowl Sunday, what are some of the busiest days of the year for your Pizza Hut?
—Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, Halloween, and Valentine’s Day.
What is the most popular day of the week for ordering pizza?
—Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
What is your most popular pizza?
—The Supreme Pizza, and Pepperoni Pizza.
Besides pizza, what is your most popular menu item?
—Buffalo Wings.
Do you prefer people call or order online?
—Online. There’s much less hassle involved in ordering online.
What are some the unusual special requests you receive when people order your pizza?
—No cheese with extra sauce; no slices; square slices; having “Happy Birthday” or some other message spelled out on the pizza with the toppings; drawings of birds or popular movie characters on the pizza box.
What is your most popular crust?
—Pan pizza crust.
For Super Bowl Sunday, how early do you recommend people order to get their pizza? Can you pre-order?
—Yes, you can pre-order in the morning, or even the day before. You can do this online.
Has the pandemic decreased sales, or are sales back to normal?
—Sales are normal right now.
Do you get more or less orders when it’s raining?
—More, since people like to stay inside and request delivery.
What do you want Linda Vista residents to know about Pizza Hut?
—I want them to know about our specials. Go online to our web site and check our special deals before ordering. Many people order without first checking our web site and they miss out on some good deals.

Don’t forget, readers. Order early for Super Bowl Sunday.

RANCH EVENTS CATERING PICK UP AT THE SCOTTISH RITE
Is this pandemic getting you down? Are you in a gastronomical rut? Are you tired of pizza, sushi, subway sandwiches and more importantly of cooking every meal yourself? Would you like a classy dinner like you might get at a wedding or fancy restaurant but can’t go to a wedding or a fancy restaurant (unless you sit outside in a parking lot).
I think we have found an answer for you. Delicious food at a reasonable price.
Ranch Events Catering is well known for catering large gatherings — weddings, parties, and more. They have been in business since 1988. For many years they have catered most events at the Scottish Rite at 1895 Camino Del Rio South. However, now that there have been no large events at the Scottish Rite since March of 2020, Ranch Events Catering has been utilizing their commercial kitchens to make exciting, delicious meals for pickup. You can find the menus at ranchevents.com. Each day there is one menu item (a different one for vegetarian). You have a choice; family meals for 6 for $30; a meal for three for $18; individual meals for $7.50; and a vegetarian option for $10.
Although there is only one option daily, in any given week this is quite a variety of types of food. Sometimes there is something different for kids (such as spaghetti).
Some recent examples are:
Wednesday, Greek chicken, lemony rice pilaf, carrot slabs, Greek salad, pita bread, tzatziki.
Friday, Pork Scaloppini, Anna potatoes, Brussel sprouts with balsamic glaze, wedge salad, rolls and butter.
Saturday, BBQ Beef Brisket, baked beans, corn fritters, pasta salad, jalapeno cheddar corn bread.
Go to the website to see each day’s entrée.
Daily vegetarian meals might include Veggie Shepherd’s Pie, corn fritters, pasta salad, corn bread, fruit cobbler, another day Veggie Tamale Pie, beans, green salad, and banuelos.
You can check the daily menu a day beforehand (not the day of) and place your order, pay for it online, decide what time you want it, and pick it up behind the Scottish Rite building (contactless, they will place it in your car).
The food is delicious, and there is plenty. Other than vegetarian meals, the dessert is a little extra. The menus are online many days in advance, so you can scroll through and pick out the days that appeal to you and place your orders. The items are well packaged and ready to eat when you get home or can be reheated for later. Give a try to this exceptional food. Who knows, when the pandemic lifts, it may not be available for you unless you go to a wedding and you know how expensive weddings can be.
We were told about Ranch Events Catering pickup by a friend who swears by their BBQ ribs dinner. She thought all their meals were good, so we decided to give it a try.
The vegetarian menu was Portobello Mushroom Wellington, loaded scalloped potatoes, cole slaw, roll and pesto aioli, and apple crumb cake. We ordered it for 5 pm pickup and although we didn’t know exactly where to go, once we got to Scottish Rite it was self explanatory as the gates were locked to the front parking lot and you had to go in through a back entrance to the building. Once we drove in, a person came out and checked our name and got our food and placed it in our car. We were very pleased with both the quality and quantity of food. The dough encrusted portabello was excellent as were the potatoes. The coleslaw was exactly to my liking. It was packaged very nicely and still hot when we got home, but could have been reheated if necessary. The hot and cold foods were in separate containers.
TWO LOCAL TASTE TREATS WORTH TRYING
The Linda Vista Update recommends trying the two local taste treats reviewed below.
#1) Bear Claw at Christy’s Donuts
Are you in the mood for a big dessert? Not concerned with calories or sugar intake?
Is the average-sized donut not meeting your hunger demands? Does your appetite sometimes get so strong that you imagine yourself as a top-of-the-food chain predator animal hunting down and devouring large prey?
If you answered yes to any or all of those questions, then I have a suggestion for you. Head on over to Christy’s Donuts. This donut shop is located at 8690 Aero Drive in Kearney Mesa (at the entrance to Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport).
Once there, you can buy one of their Bear Claw donuts. I promise you this Bear Claw will satisfy your appetite. It’s a HUGE donut. The Bear Claw costs $2.00, a little more than the average donut, but I definitely came away thinking I got my money’s worth. I didn’t happen to measure this donut, but it appeared as big as an actual grizzly bear paw (at the very least a brown bear paw). Who knows if there is an animal that hunts down and eats bears, but eating this bear claw will certainly prompt you to imagine yourself as such a ravenous animal.
The Bear Claw was also filled with a delicious apple filling, which made the donut quite a challenge to eat in one sitting, but I tried my best.
I was so impressed by this eating experience I’m now thinking of starting a Bear Claw Club which will meet once a month to eat Christy’s Donuts Bear Claws and discuss current events (once the pandemic is over, of course).
Christy’s Donut shop is slightly outside the Linda Vista neighborhood limits, but well worth the trip. The shop serves many other items—not just donuts—but the Bear Claw donut is a must if you’re looking for that special epic-scale treat to match your epic-scale appetite.
#2) Spicy Mayo Sandwich at K Sandwiches
The Spicy Mayo Shrimp sandwich at K Sandwiches is a favorite of ours for lunch. It can be ordered either on a croissant or a baguette. Since we split a whole sandwich, we find the baguette is less messy than splitting a croissant. The french type baguette is fresh and crunchy and the shrimp plentiful and perfectly cooked. The spicy pink mayo adds a little kick, but not a fiery one. This sandwich comes with lettuce and tomato and costs $8.59 which is a deal for lunch for 2. We let our carnivore sidekick try it and he declared it most excellent. One if the tastiest sandwiches he’s ever had. We will make a pesctarian out of him yet.
You can order the sandwich online, pay with a card, set a time and just go pick it up.
