Hottest Night Spot in Linda Vista Opens Tonight
Plus: Coffee with a Cop Invite, Kearny High Valedictorians, Tuna Sandwich at Yum Yum, Special County Election, Get Your Free Slurpee, and Needlepoint Event
Starting tonight there will be no question as to what location is considered the hottest night spot in Linda Vista. Courtesy of the San Diego Parks and Recreation department, along with the San Diego Parks Foundation, the City’s Parks After Dark program will make the Linda Vista Recreation Center the place to go on the following 8 series of Thursday, Friday and Saturday summer nights.
Last year’s inaugural Parks After Dark program was so successful the City’s Parks and Recreation Department is bringing it back again this summer. This year’s program will begin tonight July 6 at the Linda Vista Recreation Center (located at 7064 Levant Street), and run every Thursday, Friday and Saturday until August 26.
There will be a number of free activities for the entire family at this event, which will be held from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. You can go to the San Diego Park Foundation’s web site here to check out the list of activities for each day.

Coffee with a Cop Invite for July 13
Linda Vista residents, and residents of neighboring communities, are invited to next week’s Coffee with a Cop event, which will be held the morning of Thursday July 13 . This event will be held at the Linda Vista Library. If you have questions for the police of SDPD’s Western Division, here is where you can get answers. Several members of the Western Division will be in attendance. Come out and ask your questions, mingle with fellow members of the community, and have a cup of coffee and a donut. Check out the below flyer for details. Pass the word along to your neighbors.
Honoring Two Kearny High Valedictorians
Last week’s newsletter featured an interview with Francis Parker School’s valedictorian Andrew Zhou. For this week’s issue we traveled across town to interview the two valedictorians for Kearny High School’s Biomedical Science and Technology campus. The two valedictorians—Ana Ventura and Katie Taylor—both graduated this June with a 4.54 GPA. These two high achieving scholars were kind enough to take the time and sit down with us for an interview. Here is what they had to say.
—What college/university will you be attending next school year?
Ana: UC Berkeley
Katie: UC Davis
—What do plan to major in?
Ana: Psychology
Katie: Cognitive Science
—What was your favorite class during your four years at Kearny High?
Ana: Freshman Biology class with Ms Ogo. It was a good introduction of what to expect in more advanced classes. We had fun labs.
Katie: My junior year Biology class with Ms JJ (Ms Joanne Johnson). I learned a lot in that class and enjoyed it.
—What did you especially enjoy about your time at Kearny?
Ana: Being in sports all four years (soccer team). I met amazing people and we all became very close.
Katie: Coming back from COVID and getting to once again see everyone in person. It was like a fresh start after everything that happened.
—Is there anyone you would like to credit for your success?
Ana: My soccer coach, Ms Callahan, Ms Burgess, my computer science teacher, and Ms JJ, my biology teacher.
Katie: My parents, who were always there to support me. They taught me everything I know regarding life skills.
Where did you like to hang out or relax when not at school (i.e. a favorite restaurant or other type of place)?
Ana: I like to go to the park, either Linda Vista park or Kearny Park.
Katie: I like Maggie’s Cafe in Serra Mesa.
Anything else about attending Kearny High that you would like to mention to our readers?
Ana: I had a really good support system at Kearny, and without the people who made up that system I would not be going to such a prestigious university.
Katie: I was excited to go to Kearny because both my grandmother and her brother (my great uncle) graduated from there. It was a very special place.

Tuna Sandwich at Yum Yum Donuts
You have all heard the expression….“Sometimes you can’t see the forest for the trees.” I want to add another appropriate expression for Linda Vista that goes something like this…“Sometimes you can’t see the sandwiches for the donuts.”
Let me explain.
We have written about Yum-Yum Donuts before (located at the Linda Vista Plaza Shopping Center), but only about their great selection of donuts. However, I recently realized that not everyone knows that this establishment also sells many other items besides donuts.
I happen to be a tuna salad sandwich fanatic. When we lived on the East Coast, I think I ate a tuna fish sandwich three times a week for lunch during the work week. I just love tuna. Cannot get enough of it. When we gave up meat about 10 years ago, I drew the line at fish, hence we are pescatarians. All because I can’t give up tuna fish.
Fortunately, Linda Vista has a somewhat unlikely place where you can find a quality tuna sandwich. Once, when I stopped at Yum-Yum for donuts, I saw a poster on their window advertising a tuna fish sandwich wrapped in a green (spinach) tortilla. I went bonkers. It looked so good. I immediately went in and ordered one. Isaac (Yum-Yum long time employee) made me one of the best wraps I ever ate. Tuna salad heaped up on a warmed spinach tortilla topped with lettuce, tomato, onions, cheese and a sauce. I think they may put peppers on it if you wish. It is so big that they cut it in two and Steve and I always share one, which you must admit makes for a reasonably priced lunch. And, a half fills you up. We usually have this about once a week. Lots of protein, plus veggies. When I’ve told people how good it is, they have often responded by saying they didn’t know Yum-Yum had anything but donuts.
Well, not only do they have tuna, but a very nice menu of breakfast sandwiches and lunch sandwiches, served on bagels or tortillas. Meats such as turkey, chicken, ham, pastrami, bacon, etc. Because of those meat selections, we knew it was time to call in the Carnivore Sidekick who has been noticeably absent the last few months. We have even had people at the farmers market come up to us and ask us what happened to our Carnivore. The short answer is that after college graduation, he got a real job that he has to work at, so his time as a mystery eater is now limited. But we threatened him (or you might say bribed him) to honor us with a review of something with meat from Yum-Yum.
Carnivore decided on the pastrami melt on an onion bagel. It consisted of pastrami, Swiss cheese, chipotle mayo, mustard and onion. I probably don’t need to add that it was about the most expensive item on the menu. Our Sidekick said it was delicious. Lots of meat and cheese, just as he likes it. He indicated he will surely try it again as he thought it was a good bang for the buck. He will experiment with other bagels such as cheese or everything bagel. Did he also say “awesome” to describe this item? I am sure he did.
So, next time you go to Yum-Yum, don’t be afraid to contemplate ordering something other than donuts. Dare to think outside the donut hole! They have a good selection of tea, coffee, juices and other drinks. And tell them Betty told you about their tuna.

Special Election for District 4 Supervisor Vacancy
There are four candidates running in the special election for the District 4 seat on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. Linda Vista is part of District 4.
The four candidates include Janessa Goldbeck, Paul McQuigg, Amy Reichert, and Monica Montgomery Steppe.
The special election, to be held August 15, is required due to the resignation of former Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. District 4 residents must register by July 31 to receive a ballot in the mail.
The four candidates running for the county seat will participate in two upcoming voter forums to be held Saturday, July 8, at 11 a.m. at City Heights Recreation Center, 4380 Landis Street (sponsored by the League of Women Voters and focusing on community issues), and Friday, July 14, from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at Bard Hall, First Unitarian Universalist Church, 298 West Arbor Drive (sponsored by a coalition of local climate/environmental advocacy organizations and focusing on such issues).

District 4 includes 700,000 San Diego County residents.
The District 4 border travels south along the western boundaries of Linda Vista and Mission Valley, east-southeast along the borders of Balboa Park and North Park, east-northeast along the outer boundary of the Spring Valley Community Plan Area, the City of Lemon Grove, north and west following the boundary of the Casa de Oro-Mount Helix Community Plan Area and the City of La Mesa. The boundary continues west into the City of San Diego and follows the northern limits of the College Area Community Plan Area towards the Serra Mesa Community Plan Area, northwest at the Inland Freeway and the northeast at the Cabrillo Freeway to the northern border of the Kearny Mesa Community Plan Area, where it moves west to include the Clairemont Community Plan Area.
Tuesday is National Free Slurpee Day
What better way to cool off on a warm summer day than by enjoying a 7-11 Slurpee? These sweet, condensed slushees are renowned for their ability to serve as a cold, refreshing treat—one that can be especially appreciated during the summer months. As everyone knows, Slurpees are so cold that drinking one too quickly guarantees the onset of that infamous brain freeze sensation.
If you happen to be in any way a Slurpee fan, then you are in for what amounts to a very special treat, because July 11 (Get it? 7/11?) happens to be National Free Slurpee Day. On that day, you can go down to your local 7-11 convenience store and get a free small Slurpee. What a deal!!!
Furthermore, if you download the 7-11 convenience store app, you can obtain special Slurpee Day VIP Status and get your free Slurpee in a Special Slurpee Day cup. Who in their right mind doesn’t want to be a Slurpee VIP?
I have always viewed the Slurpee as an All-American drink—the drink reminds me of my days growing up in the 60’s and 70’s, when the Slurpee machine was seen as a technological wonder and a Slurpee only costs about 15 cents—but in learning about National Free Slurpee Day I was surprised to hear that Winnipeg, Canada was recently crowned the Slurpee capital of the world. 7-Eleven stores across Winnipeg sell an average of 188,833 Slurpee drinks per month. No matter, July 11 is our country’s National Slurpee Day. Hence, it practically becomes our patriotic duty to pay a visit to a 7-11 this coming Tuesday and get that free Slurpee.
