Councilmember Campillo Appearing at LVTC Meeting on Oct 20
Plus: Movies in the Park, Prescription Drug Take Back, and Autumn in Linda Vista
Ed. Note: Welcome to a special abbreviated edition of the Linda Vista Update. We are publishing this Monday edition to make sure the word gets out in time about this week’s Linda Vista Town Council general meeting. See the details in the below article.
The Linda Vista Update will be on a one-week hiatus with no publication of the newsletter this Thursday, but we will enthusiastically return next week.
The Linda Vista Town Council (LVTC) will hold its monthly general meeting (on Zoom) this Wednesday October 20 at 6:00 pm. District 7 Councilmember Raul Campillo will be the guest speaker. The meeting is open to the public. All Linda Vista residents are welcome to attend. Though the virtual meeting will begin promptly at 6:00 pm, attendees can begin logging on to the Zoom site at 5:45 pm.
The Zoom link for this event is https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87674970254
This is a great opportunity to get an update on District 7 and city of San Diego matters. Councilmember Campillo will also be available to answer questions (as time permits). At these meetings, there are usually representatives from other political and civic entities who also provide short updates of interest to local residents. Don’t miss out on this chance to engage with the Linda Vista community.
The LVTC recently resumed its tradition of monthly general meetings and hopes to soon transition back to in-person events. If you want more information about the Linda Vista Town Council you can click here.
We hope as many of our Linda Vista reader residents as possible attend this general meeting.
Get in the Halloween Spirit
The Linda Vista Recreation Center will be hosting its latest “Movie in the Park” on October 23 at 5:30 pm. The Nightmare Before Christmas is a movie for the entire family. See the below poster for more details.
DEA Prescription Take Back Day
The SD Police Department is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Agency to conduct its biannual Prescription Drug Take Back Day this Saturday October 23.
According to Community Relation Officer David Surwilo, “the public can drop off potentially dangerous prescription medications at collection sites which will adhere to local COVID-19 guidelines and regulations in order to maintain the safety of all participants and local law enforcement. San Diego Police Department’s Western Division, located at 5215 Gaines Street, will once again be one of the collection sites.
DEA and its partners will collect tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs.
Simply pull into the parking lot and drive up to the collection location and the officers shall retrieve your drop off. You do not need to leave your vehicle."

Improving the Autumnal Experience in Linda Vista
San Diego is seeing its first evidence of fall, or at least the kind of fall we’ve all grown accustomed to here in Southern California. For example, our night-time temperatures actually dropped down into the high 50’s this past week. No more 90-degree days. I actually saw one yellowish-brown leaf fall from a tree. Pumpkins are available at Ralph’s. And pumpkin spice latte is once again being sold at Starbucks.
Though I appreciate San Diego’s version of fall, I sometimes long for the more traditional East Coast version of fall with its very cool, brisk autumnal air, all the trees changing colors, layers of leaves on the ground, visits to the local pumpkin patch, getting lost in a corn maze, going on hayrides around acres of farmland, and maybe even paying a stop at a Halloween haunted house on a chilly October night. I believe the people who have spent all their lives here in Southern California don’t know what they are missing by being unable to experience the fall wonders associated with the East Coast.
This led me to do some thinking as I was walking around Linda Vista the other day. I looked around the area and asked myself…Is it possible to create a more East Coast version of fall right here in our LV community? Fortunately, I did this thinking while standing near the corner of Linda Vista Road and Comstock Street, right in the middle of downtown Linda Vista.
I concluded this underutilized corner, adjacent to Skateworld and across the street from the fire station—currently occupied by a collection of large potted plants—could serve as a perfect location for recreating some East Coast fall activities.
First, I imagined this space as a future pumpkin patch. As noted in the photo above depicting a lone pumpkin, one has to vigorously visualize how wonderful such a larger pumpkin patch might look like, but if we start planting the seeds now, a full pumpkin patch crop could be available this time next year.
Second, I also imagined this space being used to house a Corn Maze. Of course, since this is Southern California, some allowances have to be made. In this case, a thick, intricate Palm Tree Maze may have to suffice in place of the more traditional Corn Maze. As shown in the photo above, the beginnings of such a Palm Tree Maze are already there.
Finally, since it’s hard to find hay, much less a hay cart, in this suburban neighborhood (it’s been a long time since there were dairies in Mission Valley), we might have to forget about old fashion hayrides and compromise by settling for a haunted ride on a city bus.
In any event, let’s start thinking about activities for next year’s fall season. You might say the skeletal structure for implementing such activities is already there.
