The Linda Vista Update—a Community Newsletter
Editor’s note: This is a special Tuesday edition of the Linda Vista Update newsletter. We decided to publish earlier in the week to make sure everyone reading the newsletter is left with enough time to plan on going to Wednesday’s Linda Vista Town Council monthly meeting and Thursday’s Earth Day celebration at the Love, Linda Vista Farmers Market. We will return to our regular Thursday publication schedule on April 27.
The Bayside Community Center and the Love, Linda Vista Farmers Market are teaming up together this Thursday April 20 for an early celebration of Earth Day 2023. The celebration will involve a combination of growing, learning and artistic activity. During Thursday’s Farmers Market, Bayside will operate a booth at which representatives of the Bayside Environmental Learning Center (BELC) will be distributing twenty 5-gallon grow bags to local residents. This distribution will begin at 4:00 pm. The grow bags are intended to give people the opportunity to experience growing a culinary herb like cilantro or basil before they advance to growing vegetables. The grow bag giveaway will contain a starter plant and seeds. As explained by Amy Zink, BELC program manager, “Herbs are much easier to grow. If you are successful growing them, they can serve as a gateway to growing vegetables.” As part of distributing the vegetables, Bayside representatives will screen individuals to make sure they have some “grow space” at their respective residences. “Herbs don’t do well inside,” Zink advises, “So we want to make sure interested people have an outdoor area, even if it’s space on an apartment balcony.” The grow bags will be accompanied by a watering can. Interested individuals will also receive advice on effectively growing the starters plants and planting the seeds.
In addition to distributing the grow bags, families visiting the Bayside booth will be able to enjoy seed art packages. This activity will involve using seeds as a fun, creative way to express their appreciation of plants and vegetables.
Finally, people visiting the booth will also get the opportunity to learn about progress being made toward building the proposed Community Garden which will be built at the Linda Vista Neighborhood Park and Recreation Center.
Amy Zink enthusiastically advises that whether or not they are interested in obtaining a grow bag Linda Vista residents should “Just come out to the Farmers Market this Thursday and celebrate Earth Day with us.”
Jonathan Widener, the president of the Love, Linda Vista Farmers Market also encourages local residents to attend the Farmers Market and visit the Bayside booth. “We are proud to once again partner up with Bayside Community Center—this time to celebrate Earth Day. We want people to check out what all of our farmers market vendors are selling, to include fresh fruits and vegetables, and to take advantage of the opportunity to learn a little about gardening from Bayside’s Environmental Learning Center. What a great way to celebrate Earth Day in Linda Vista!”
The Love, Linda Vista Farmers Market operates every Thursday from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Linda Vista Plaza Shopping Center.
LV Multi-Cultural Fair/Parade Coming Up
Linda Vista’s most popular event—the LV Multi-Cultural Fair and Parade will be held Saturday April 29. The theme of this year’s Fair/Parade is “A Community Love Letter to Linda Vista.”
Part of this event involves recognizing the winners of the Fair/Parade Student Art Contest. We are happy to report the winners have been selected. They include:
Christian
Daletza
Amy
Mariajose
Marisol
The student contest winners are from Empower Language Academy and Linda Vista STEAM Magnet Elementary.
You can see their art work surrounding the below LV Multicultural Fair/Parade flyer.
The students responded to the following prompt:
Think about what you love about Linda Vista and the community. Are there local restaurants that you enjoy going to, parks you visit or events that take place in LindaVista that you can’t miss? Why is Linda Vista a special place to live? If someone is not from Linda Vista, what is something you could tell or show them that would make them love the community? Describe an experience that took place in the Linda Vista community that made you love living in Linda Vista.
These students will be officially recognized for their art at the Fair on April 29..
When Your Car Deserves Special Treatment
The rainy season seems to be coming to a close, which means it’s time to get all the winter mud stains and other such messy debris off your car. If you are serious about making your car refreshingly clean…if you want it to experience a car re-birth worthy of springtime…then we recommend taking your dirty vehicle to Professional Auto Detail-Diaz, located right behind the Buggy Bath Carwash (across the street from the Linda Vista Post office). It’s the place to go to make your car look especially sharp. Of course, you can get your car clean by using the do-it-yourself Buggy Bath car wash. And that can be done rather inexpensively. But on those occasions when you want your car to be given extra special attention, then I recommend the detailing jobs that Professional Auto Detail can provide.
We originally wrote about this Linda Vista business long ago ago in one of our first issues—back when we didn’t have that many readers—but recently one of our enthusiastic readers, Vonnie G., wrote to us and commented….“I finally had my car detailed by the guy at the do-it-yourself carwash. My car is 7 years old and he make it look brand new. I have never had such a beautiful detail done. He ever got some paint that was on my back bumper off. I would highly recommend him to anyone who wants their car thoroughly cleaned and polished.”
After reading that recommendation, we couldn’t resist taking one of our own cars back to Professional Auto Detail to let Mr. Diaz and his crew work their magic. We asked for one of the less expensive detailing services. After a rough winter, the car was looking very dirty on the outside, and very messy inside, to include miscellaneous food wrappers, assorted COVID masks, and left-over McDonald’s fries littering the hard-to-get-to spaces between and under the seats. Sure enough, after an hour we returned to find our seven-year-old car looking brand new, both from the outside and the inside. The gunk that had accumulated in all of the car’s nooks and crannies was totally gone. It was like a miracle!
If you are serious about your car looking its best, drive it behind Buggy Bath Car Wash and let Professional Auto Detail do the rest.
LV Update Poetry Corner
Celebrating National Poetry Month
April is National Poetry Month. This celebration began in 1996—introduced by the Academy of American Poets to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry in the United States. The Linda Vista Update wishes to do its part to celebrate National Poetry Month right here in Linda Vista by sharing the below original poem which, in turn, celebrates the Love, Linda Vista Farmers Market, the community’s favorite Thursday afternoon event. The poem aims to reflect part of the mission of the Farmers Market—supporting local micro entrepreneurs and promoting community spirit.
The Love, Linda Vista Farmers Market
Forget the bricks. Forget the mortar.
Vendor booths stocked inside four tent rods.
Capitalistic fragility
and energy are put on display,
planted in festive opposing rows.
As blue canopies battle the breeze,
locals range free to shop and mingle
in the open air, in search of fresh
fruits and vegetables, or a sweet snack.
Thirty micro-entrepreneurs
cultivating a customer base
hawk their wares in the afternoon sun,
exchanging dollars and goods till dark.
But another form of crisp barter
occurs, as neighbors brush away the
COVID rust, meeting in face-to-face
mode, sharing word of ripe blueberries—
organic conversation returns.
