Editor’s note: This is a special abbreviated edition of the Linda Vista Update, published to remind all of our subscribers of a special community event occurring this Thursday December 8. We hope all of you can attend Bayside Community Center’s 90th anniversary celebration. Please read below to get all the details.
A favorite Linda Vista institution will celebrate its 90th anniversary this Thursday December 8. The Bayside Community Center will conduct its celebration from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm in conjunction with the Love, Linda Vista Farmers Market, which is held every Thursday at the Linda Vista Plaza Shopping Center.
The celebration will recognize Bayside’s origins in Little Italy as the Bayside Settlement House, (established to empower and meet the needs of lower income immigrants and native-born residents in urban settings), its time in City Heights, and and its many years of service in Linda Vista.
Bayside’s current mission is “to empower our diverse community to improve its quality of life through services, education, and advocacy.”
Festivities for the Bayside celebration will begin on December 8 at 4:00 pm and run until 7:00 pm. During this time, Bayside will feature a series of performers to include Ballet Folklorico El Tapatio, Genbu Daiko (a local Taiko drumming group), Daniel Moceri (original Bayside participant and long-time Little Italy resident) singing Doo Wop, and the Fern Street Circus.
Bayside will also show its documentary titled “Bayside: 90 Years of Empowerment." You can see a trailer of the documentary by clicking here.

In regard to this celebration, the president of the non-profit Love, Linda Vista Farmers Market—Jonathan Widener—commented, “I encourage everyone in the Linda Vista area to come out this Thursday and help celebrate Bayside’s anniversary. The Center plays such a vital role in the community, and this anniversary celebration provides the perfect opportunity to honor everything they do for our residents. Bayside has scheduled some fun entertainment, and they will be screening their documentary. While there, attendees should also have a great time checking out all the products that our Farmers Market vendors have to offer…fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as great ethnic foods and various crafts. It should be an exciting afternoon for everyone!”
The Farmers Market will operate this Thursday from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

USD Women’s Volleyball Team Advances to NCAA Regionals
After finishing the regular season as the number 2 ranked team in the country, the University of San Diego Women’s Volleyball team won their first and second round matches in a NCAA tournament held this last Thursday and Friday at Jenny Craig Pavilion. On Thursday, USD beat Colorado State 3-1 (best of 5 matches). This victory allowed them to advance to a second round game against Washington State. In this match, played before a large and enthusiastic crowd rooting for the home team, the Toreros decisively beat the Cougars 3-1.
As a result of the two victories, the Toreros will now travel to Stanford University to play in the NCAA regional tournament, which comprises part of the Sweet Sixteen round. They will play an opening match against the University of Kentucky on Thursday December 8. If they win on Thursday, they will play the winner of the Stanford - University of Houston game on December 10.
This is the fifth time in the program’s history that the Toreros have advanced to the NCAA regional tournament.
The Toreros, who finished the regular season with a stellar 27-1 record, now have a 26-match consecutive winning streak going into Thursday’s competition.
